SITUATION UPDATE
Event information
- Destructive winds have continued to be recorded in numerous locations across the state over the past 24 hours, however as of 8:07am Tuesday morning all Severe Weather Warnings have been cancelled.
- Accumulated rainfall totals over the past five to seven days about the west of the state has been in excess of 200 mm, with some isolated locations recording over 250 mm over the multi-day period.
- Power outages continue to occur, particularly in the North and North-West. Severe weather is making repair work difficult, which is expected to prolong some outages.
- Several schools and libraries remain closed.
- Several Flood Watch and Acts and Flood Advice messages are current across the state. Further detail is available via TasAlert
Current relief and early recovery activity
- Two Evacuation Centres are open in New Norfolk; one at Derwent Valley Sports and Recreation Centre and the other at the New Norfolk Memorial Hall.
- TCCEM and Red Cross have been providing PFA at evacuation centres.
- 21 TasNetworks Community Relief centres have been opened across the state for to support those impacted by power outages. Several Neighbourhood Houses have also been providing support.
- Emergency Assistance Grants (EAGs) have been activated for those impacted areas in the Derwent Valley LGA and Central Highlands LGA.
Community impact and needs
- Impact assessments are underway.
- Recovery Tasmania will work with local and state government partners, and NGO’s to identify immediate recovery needs within the affected communities.
- At the time of writing, reported social needs include community isolation, food relief issues compounded by cost-of-living pressures, power outages causing distress, power outages disrupting community and household functioning and property clean up.
- Short-term support and planning for the above is underway, with longer-term support to be planned in partnership with local and state government partners and NGO’s.
MISSION – Purpose / Goal of this deployment.
Provide PFA and Personal Support for affected people and people utilising the Evacuation Centre alongside other Government Agencies / Recovery Partner Network members or NGO’s and other personal support agency personnel such as Red Cross etc.
EXECUTION – Arrangements for the deployment
Location
New Norfolk Evacuation Centre & Boyer Oval
1st to 4th September – 1pm to 4pm each day.
*This timeframe may be reduced or extended depending on need. DPAC will communicate regularly with Red Cross and TCCEM regarding ongoing need. A formal stand-down notification will be forwarded by email from DPAC when service activation is no longer required.
Variations to daily deployment timeframes and locations can be negotiated at the local level between Derwent Valley Council and TCCEM (for example, if Council believes support is no longer required at a particular location on a given day, or there is another location nearby where people are known to require support). In such circumstances, Red Cross and TCCEM will keep DPAC informed for situational awareness.
Locations for the service/s activated include but are not limited to the following and will be arranged by agreement between the relevant parties as required:
- Evacuation Centre –Presence at the centre to support attendees if required
- Boyer Oval –Conduct walk-arounds to check in with campers
Travel arrangements – By own vehicle – cost recovery arrangements are in place if needed.
